WHO highlights need for more protective measures against tobacco

The World Health Organization has urged nations around the world to toughen up tobacco-control measures. The United Nations agency warns that nearly nine million people a year die of tobacco-related causes. WHO’s director for health promotion, Dr. Rüdiger Krech said 5.6 billion people – 71% of the world’s population – are now protected with at least one best practice policy to help save lives from deadly tobacco – five times more than in 2007.
