South Africa’s first female navigator dies at sea

South Africa’s first female submarine navigator, Gillian Malouw, was among the three officers who died at sea on Wednesday, the military has confirmed. BBC Africa reports that the three submariners were washed off their vessel by high waves off the coast near Cape Town. Malouw, who was 32, joined the Navy in 2010, qualified as a combat officer in 2018, and became a navigator in 2019. She died alongside William Masela Mathipa and Mmokwapa Lucas Mojela.
