Medical schemes deny prejudice

The Board of Health Funders of Southern Africa says they cannot be blamed for trying to prevent possible misuse of their members’ funds and root out fraud where suspected. This, News24 reports, after an independent panel found that the algorithms used by medical schemes are more likely to flag black doctors for investigations of fraud, waste and abuse. While the panel says it did not find evidence of “deliberate unfair treatment”, saying instead that unfair discrimination was the outcome of medical schemes’ processes, medical schemes themselves say their bots don’t know a person’s race and they only pick up suspicious trends.
