In the latest in the South African ‘blue light assault’ case, experts say that the police are entitled to summarily dismiss eight presidential bodyguards who beat a young soldier unconscious with a rifle butt. Why this still hasn’t happened raises fears that they are being politically protected. News24 quotes a retired general as saying “The police’s top management could have defused the whole debacle with the expeditious process and thereby have won the respect of the public”. “Now those eight cronies are sitting in their offices pushing paper around.’’
