Warnings of genocide in Darfur

Fierce fighting has resumed in the Sudanese twin cities of Khartoum and Omdurman, with reports of the possibility of genocide in the Darfur region. The Guardian newspaper quotes the vice-president of the Sudan Doctors Union as saying that up to 5,000 people had been killed and 8,000 injured around the town of El Geneina over the past two months, with bodies left in the street. Meanwhile the United Nations says it has received testimony of summary executions accompanied by hate speech calling for the Masalit ethnic group to be killed and expelled from Sudan.
