Russian ‘coup’ could be a boon for South Africa

Although the short-lived uprising by the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin appears to be under control, analysts reckon it is increasingly unlikely that Russian President Vladimir Putin will risk leaving Moscow for fear of his safety – and in case of another coup attempt that may unseat him. This, News24 reports, could be a blessing for South Africa, which would have faced pressure to arrest him were he to have attended the BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August. Various economists now predict the strengthening of the Rand as the risk of a Putin visit recedes.
