Democrats in the US Congress say they will not help Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, survive in office if members of his own party turn against him. Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports that the Speaker is facing a leadership challenge from Republicans furious over the weekend compromise that he struck with Democrats to keep the US government open.
