Japan marks anniversary of Hiroshima atomic bombing

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui on Sunday called out the nuclear deterrence policy of G7 leaders as “folly” at the memorial ceremony of the atomic bombing that was also attended by Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. According to Reuters, Matsui advocated for the global elimination of nuclear weapons in light of the growing nuclear threat worldwide.
Meanwhile, controversy about the new Hollywood film “Oppenheimer” is brewing in Japan as the country marks 78 years since the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The movie, which tells the story of the scientist who helped create the a-bomb, has not yet been assigned a release date for Japan.
