Illegal mining definitely linked to Boksburg tragedy

In an update to the Angelo informal settlement tragedy that saw 17 people die, residents say a pungent stench – which they claimed smelt like rotten eggs – was coming from the yard where illegal mining usually occurred. News24 reports that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi could not confirm whether any of the deceased were illegal miners but promised that officials would go house by house, documenting the identities of the deceased, some of whom are known to be foreign nationals. Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Elias Mawela meanwhile confirmed that the yard was a processing centre for illegal miners.
