Ian Khama ‘fears for his life’

Former Botswana president Ian Khama says he didn’t attend Sir Seretse Khama Day celebrations over the weekend because he fears for his life. News24 reports that Khama, who faces 14 charges, ranging from unlawful possession of firearms to money laundering, said he had planned to attend the celebrations in the Botswana capital, Gaborone, following an invitation from President Mokgweetsi Masisi and recent court rulings in his favour. He says he changed his mind though after learning that the Directorate of Intelligence and Security had been “beefed up at points of entry” in anticipation of his return, and being “informed by very reliable sources … in South Africa that there was a DIS-authorised plan to carry out a hit on him”.
