The Health Professionals Council of South Africa is taking steps to address the growing problem of bogus doctors infiltrating the healthcare system. This comes after the Gauteng Department of Health took legal action against bogus TikTok doctor, Matthew Lani. It is alleged that Lani stole a second year medical intern’s identity. The council’s CEO, Magome Masike confirmed to Newzroom Afrika that Lani is not registered as a health practitioner in South Africa and that practicing medicine without proper registration constitutes to be a criminal offense
