The upcoming World Press Freedom Day reminds government of its obligation to safeguard press freedom in Namibia as an important organ of democracy, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Peya Mushelenga said on Wednesday. The Namibia press agency reports that speaking during a fundraising event for the Day, Mushelenga said that while government is mandated by law to protect media freedom, journalists are implored upon to reflect on their role within the framework of integrity and responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to the values of democracy, transparency and good governance that are a prerequisite to press freedom.
