Leader of the official opposition, Popular Democratic Movement, McHenry Venaani, explaining that the ruling party will need a two-thirds majority in Parliament in order to extend the State of Emergency has said his party will not accept such an extension because it can collapse the economy. The Namibia press agency reports that speaking in Parliament on Tuesday 8 September 2020, he said he is well informed that government is planning on extending the current State of Emergency, which is supposed to end this month, but said his party will not accept another lockdown or extension of the State of Emergency because it is destroying the economy and causing massive job losses. He said the government should instead come up with an exit plan and educate people on how to live with the “new normal” and COVID-19.
