There was an uproar on South African social media yesterday after news broke that Chinese born Dr. Xaiomei Havard had sworn into parliament to replace the late Jackson Mthembu, with the hashtag #NoChineseInSAParliament trending on Twitter, and #PutSouthAfricansFirst, which last year emerged with xenophobic messages, also making an appearance. Havard, who is a naturalised South African citizen, is married to a South African, and who has a 17-year political career in the country, will replace the late Mthembu in Parliament, but not as Minister in the Presidency or fill his position Cabinet.
