In response to a proposal by the president of Namibia National Liberation Veterans’ Association, Ben Shikongo, that war veterans become a wing of the Swapo party in order to be appointed to key government positions and be elected to parliament, Swapo party Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa said the party and government are grateful to war veterans for their contribution to the country’s independence, but their time is up and they should pave way for the young generation. The Namibia press agency quotes Shaningwa as saying that the country “needs young people to take over and continue from where the elders left off because the current challenges the country is facing require fresh minds to find solutions and those fresh minds will come from the young generations”. She said war veterans should therefore “be prepared for that and allow new blood to come into the party and government structures”.
