Celebrated South African human rights lawyer Priscilla Jana, who served as an MP from 1994 to 1999, was South African ambassador to the Netherlands and Ireland, and served as the deputy chairperson of the SA Human Rights Commission, has died. Jana was also one of former president Nelson Mandela’s attorneys while he was imprisoned on Robben Island, and represented freedom fighter and struggle activist, Solomon Mahlangu and played a role in creating international awareness about his execution in 1979 after he had been convicted of murder for activities he carried out as a member of the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe.
