Russia has given permanent residence to American whistleblower Edward Snowden. He fled to the country after exposing highly classified information from his country’s National Security Agency in 2013 while he was an employee of the CIA. Newsflash reports that these revealed numerous global surveillance programmes that led to questions about national security and individual privacy. The US charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government property. Russia first gave him asylum and then a residence visa that was extended every year.
