Namibia Wildlife Resorts Limited has issued a statement following the publication of photos that have circulated on social media depicting the unsatisfactory condition of the Namutoni fort, saying that the fort has been closed off from the public for several years with the intent to renovate it to its former state. NWR explained that the envisioned renovation work is estimated to cost about N$ 20 million which is not within the company’s current budget and while they welcome constructive criticism are also aware of lobby groups pushing for privatisation of the country’s resources, such as parks and resorts. The company added though that the accumulation of filth within the fort structure has been addressed and periodic cleaning will take place in future up until such time as the fort can be renovated and once again opened to the public.
