The UK Public Health Department epidemiological consultant, Susan Hopkins says despite fears of an increase in Covid-19 deaths, the new, rapidly spreading variant of the virus is not as dangerous as the novel coronavirus. Hopkins says it is not the first nor the last time that a mutation of Covid-19 will present itself. She told Sky News this is a common occurrence when scientists are working towards a vaccine for any virus. Meanwhile, Professor Robin Shattock, who is leading the UK’s Imperial Covid-19 vaccine programme, says researchers and scientists still have to keep a close eye on the new strain, named 501.V2, as Covid-19 remains an unpredictable and deadly virus.
