Mozambique’s government has denounced the assault and execution of a naked woman suspected of being an insurgent but at the same time questioned the authenticity of the images after disturbing video footage was circulated on social media showing men in army uniform, who appear to be government troops, beating and eventually shooting the victim dead. The AFP news agency reports that several other videos allegedly showing soldiers abusing captives believed to be linked to al-Shabab were leaked to Amnesty International in May with the watchdog accusing Mozambican security forces of torturing suspected militants in the northern Cabo Delgado region. The government however dismissed the allegations last week, saying the violence was carried out by jihadists impersonating troops.
