Speaking at a media conference on Wednesday 30 September 2020, Minster of Finance Ipumbu Shiimi and Minister of Fisheries Dr Albert Kawana explained that 52 companies participated in the recently completed government auction of fishing rights, 13 of whom emerged as the highest successful bidders and were awarded bids valued at a collective total of N$627.9million. During a second round of evaluation a further 18 bidders were awarded bids valued at N$464.9million. Of the highest successful bidders though, only 5 took up their offers and settled their payment obligations, which amounted to N$8,446,000, while an additional N$76,000 was generated from application fees. The Minister of Finance insisted that the lessons learned from this round of auctions will be used to ensure that future auctions reach their set objectives.
