Chaotic, rancorous – and the biggest loser was the American people, that is how political analysts have described last night’s debate between US President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden. What was billed as the most anticipated debate in 30 years, they say may go down as the worst ever. Tense from the beginning, it quickly devolved into a chaotic litany of criticisms and a cascade of insults with each candidate interrupting the other, though moderator Chris Wallace said Trump was more disruptive. The subject of jobs was raised several times and Trump accused Biden of not supporting law enforcement and once again argued over whether mail-in ballots can be counted properly, but perhaps the biggest take-away from the debate, at least on social media is that fact that when Trump was asked whether he would condemn white supremacists and militia groups, instead of directly answering the question, instead blamed the months of violence in US cities on “left-wing groups” and told the Proud Boys, a far-right group often associated with violent protests, to “stand back and stand by”.
