Twenty-three youth protesters arrested for contravening Public Health COVID-19 Gathering Regulations after they staged a demonstration against gender-based violence in Windhoek on Saturday, are expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The Namibia press agency reports that the protesters were arrested for holding a public gathering without giving notice to the commander of the police station of the nearest place where the gathering was taking place, the Namibian Police Force said in a crime bulletin on Sunday, while the gathering was also reported to be in contravention of COVID-19 regulations prohibiting the gathering of more than 50 people, the police said. Meanwhile various civil society organisations and commentators have condemned what they term the “disproportionate actions used by the Namibian Police” against the protesters.
